Caryl Joy Young Bio

Arkansas native Caryl Joy Young has pursued her interest in art all of her adult life. In her travels to 47 countries, she has visited the great art museums of the world. Many of her paintings have been inspired by these travels. Before retiring from her 30-year teaching career in Pine Bluff, AR, Caryl Joy studied with artists Barry Thomas, Carole Katchen, Rosalie Bushnok, and Kathy Strause.

Since moving to Hot Springs Village with her husband Terry, Caryl Joy has immersed herself in art. These past three years she has taken art courses at the National Park Community College in Hot Springs; traveled to Júzcar, Spain, to study with pastel artist Maggie Price for two weeks of plein air painting; and taken workshops from other nationally recognized artists Albert Handell, Mike Mahon, Joe Fettigingis, Robert Moore, Bill Garrison and Richard Stephens.

Her works are known for being colorful, contemporary, and playful expressions in pastel, oils, and acrylics. They hang in private collections in Arkansas, Texas, Colorado, Florida and Louisiana.

Caryl Joy is a member of The Fine Art Center of Hot Springs, the Arkansas Pastel Society, and the Artists Workshop Gallery, 810 Central Avenue in downtown Hot Springs where she exhibits her work. Her paintings may also be seen at the Brick House Grill, 801 Central Avenue, and Central Park Fusion Cuisine, 200 Park Avenue.

Highlights of 2008 include her January Solo Exhibit in Hot Springs Village at the Ponce de Leon Center, being one of 25 Arkansas artists juried into the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute’s show at Petit Jean Mountain, and receiving an Honorable Mention in the Arkansas Pastel Society’s fall show. She continues to paint every Monday with three other artists who together published The Monday Studio, a 150-page, full-color art book containing 32 paintings by each artist with anecdotal and whimsical descriptions of each work.

The year 2009 promises to be as exciting. Besides where she has permanent displays, in April, May and June Caryl Joy’s work may be seen at the River Walk’s Art Wall, in June as a featured artist at the Artists Workshop Gallery in Hot Springs, in September in an exhibit with The Monday Studio at the South Arkansas Arts Museum in El Dorado and a second exhibit with the group in October at Garvan Woodland Gardens in Hot Springs.
